Areej Kaoud

Nationality:
Palestinian
Lives and Works:
Dubai,

Areej Kaoud is a Palestinian visual artist raised in Montreal, Canada. Her practice draws on an interest in narratives and disastrous scenarios. Emergency provisions are a common subject, using writing, recording, performance art, data accumulation and installation, elaborating on realities and referring to the politics of the senses. Areej’s projects articulate the distance between anxiety, preparedness and the humour which takes place in preparing for non-immediate threats. Her works only intend to trigger narratives and not create them.

After completing her MFA at Central Saint Martins and a MFA in Curating at Goldsmiths University of London, her practice progressed as conceptual without being attached to any one medium. She currently works as an Adjunct Professor at American University of Sharjah and lives between Dubai and London.

Areej joined Tashkeel in 2010 as Member 96. In addition to running various workshops (2009–2015), she exhibited in ‘Made in Tashkeel’ (2010) and ‘CollaCurating: Sculptural Perspectives’ (2015). Areej participated in the 2016 A.i.R. programme, culminating in the performance piece ‘The Artist Hard at Work’ which was performed at Art Dubai and Tashkeel.
