In this workshop, participants will explore the rich visual language of Tatreez (traditional Palestinian embroidery patterns) through an experimental and playful approach to surface design. Rather than stitching by hand, we will reinterpret these motifs using hand-printing techniques on fabric. Inspired by the geometric symbols and story-telling nature of Tatreez, participants will first engage with the patterns—learning about their cultural significance and meanings—then translate them into bold printed compositions using simple block-printing, stamping, and free-hand printing tools. The goal of this workshop is to celebrate tradition through contemporary making, making the process more spontaneous, fun, and accessible—without the time commitment of embroidery. Participants will experiment with color layering, motif placement, and repetition, encouraging creative freedom while still honoring the symbolic origins of the Tatreez patterns. By the end of the session, each participant will walk away with a hand-printed textile piece (like a small wall hanging, scarf, or tote bag), carrying with it both personal expression and cultural storytelling.
