Placemat Stories

What if an everyday placemat could become a canvas for your imagination?

Inspired by Shamin Sharum’s exhibition, Provisional Sanctuaries, this hands-on workshop invites participants to explore painting and fabric collage on a placemat of their own. Taking inspiration from the artist’s paintings on mats, participants will discover how an everyday object can become a space for creative expression.

Start by developing a composition inspired by your own ideas, then experiment with brushwork, colours and painted shapes. Bring your artwork to life by layering fabric scraps, playing with contrasting textures and patterns, and letting the placemat’s surface become part of the design.

No two creations will be alike. Leave with a unique placemat artwork that reflects your imagination and your own response to the exhibition. No previous art experience is needed, just a willingness to experiment!
