The workshop will focus on learning the basic rules of Arabic letters and type such as structure, proportions, shape and families. Participants will be taught how to create an experimental modular alphabet, based on a limited number of shapes and elements, eventually defining a complete typographic system. The alphabets are created using manual means of reproduction such as paper cut-outs, rubber stamps, stencilling, woodblocks and linocuts, to allow the participants to focus purely on elements of modularity and repetition. The final outcome of the workshop will be presented as manually produced alphabet posters.
