Markings I, site-specific Land Art Installation - Moza Almatrooshi
10 April 2016
In Markings I, the artist created a pathway marked by flags that display natural textures of rock and sand formations found in Mleiha, an area in the Emirate of Sharjah which boasts a grand desert and mountainous setting. The textures on the flags posed as castings of nature that is being reduced due to increasing human activity that is seeping into the area by beckoning the viewer to look and move around the scene while never being able to experience the texture through their sense of touch.
This enforced path was a translation of the artist’s usual intervention and performative walks in the Mleiha desert which the audience was invited to experience by walking through a route marked by the textile casts.
