Maitha Demithan

Maitha Demithan is a UAE based visual artist whose work explores the intersections of light, memory, and human presence. Working across scanography, painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking, she creates images that blur the boundaries between photography and painting, transforming fleeting moments into quiet, contemplative works.

Best known for her pioneering use of scanography, Demithan transforms the flatbed scanner into a creative tool, building layered compositions that challenge the conventions of photography. Rather than recording a single instant, she scans subjects in fragments before meticulously reconstructing them into seamless images shaped by time, movement, and careful observation. For Demithan, scanning is less a mechanical act than a way of painting with light.

Across her practice, she is interested in transformation and the ways light, material, and process can reshape our experience of identity, memory, and cultural heritage. Whether working digitally or by hand, she approaches each medium with the same sensitivity, allowing technology and traditional techniques to exist in dialogue.

Demithan's work has been exhibited internationally in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Venice, Brisbane, London, Washington D.C, Paris, and Korea, including Abu Dhabi Art (2011), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (2012), and Art Dubai (2012 to 2014). She held her first solo exhibition, Mutajadid, in 2014 and was selected for Stephen Shore's Emirati Expressions II (2011). She received a Bachelor's degree in Art and Design from Zayed University in 2012.
