There is a calm, unhurried pleasure in slab building: rolling clay into smooth, even sheets, then cutting, joining, and shaping them into form, much like working with fabric or paper. In this workshop, participants will explore the versatile slab technique, learning to roll even slabs, control thickness and moisture, and join pieces neatly using scoring and slipping before shaping them into functional and sculptural forms — cups, bowls, plates, cones, or sculptures. Working slowly and by hand, without the wheel, participants will also explore surface refinement, texture design, and creative form building, discovering how a flat sheet of clay can be coaxed into three dimensions. By the end of the session, each participant will have handbuilt their own finished slab pieces, ready to be fired.
