Adel A. Dajani

Adel A. Dajani is a traveler, writer and economic commentator on the Middle East and North Africa. He is currently based between Tunisia, Libya and the UK.

One of the first Arabs to ever go to Eton, after graduating from SOAS with an LLB in comparative and international law, Adel became a barrister at law and member of the UK Bar Association and later a member of the select corporate finance department of HSBC’S investment bank in Hong Kong. He has subsequently been a founder of niche financial firms in the UK and the Maghreb.

Mr Dajani is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and is a co-author of the Islamic Frontiers of China- Peoples of the Silk Road based on his extensive travels in China with How Man Wong, the President of the China Exploration Society and more recently in 2021 the author of the memoir of his Palestinian family, From Jerusalem to a Kingdom by the Sea.

CharLes

CharLes is a salonnière-portraitist. Trained as engineer, in 2010 she became a full-time artist and enrolled for figure drawing lessons at Beaux-Arts de Paris (National School of Fine Arts). In 2014, she graduated in conceptual art from the RHoK Academy of Arts, Brussels. In 2011, she launched ‘Le Salon de CharLes’, which engages a guest speaker in dialogue with an audience. Each intimate gathering concludes with the unveiling of a portrait. So far, she has hosted 23 Salons, including prominent figures such as Abdel Rahman El Bacha (pianist composer), Frank de Winne (Astronaut), Bose Krishnamachari (Kochi Biennale), Dr Hayat Shamsuddin (EXPO2020), among others. Beside her Salon practice, CharLes has realised more than 40 commissioned portraits, experimenting with different mediums such as oil, mosaic, sculpture, sound installation, ornamentation and interviews. CharLes' portraits belong to the private collections of Herman Daled and Abdulfattah Sharaf. CharLes is a member of Tashkeel.

Nujoom Al Ghanem and CharLes' collaborative exhibition and residency public outcome will be accompanied by a ‘Le Salon de CharLes’ with traveller, writer and economic commentator Adel A. Dajani. ‘Le Salon de CharLes’ is a majlis-type gathering which engages a guest speaker in dialogue to share a story with an audience. Each gathering concludes with the unveiling of a conceptual portrait offered to the guest of honor. So far, CharLes has hosted 23 Salons editions in Brussels, Paris and Dubai including prominent figures such as Frank de Winne (European Space Agency Astronaut), Abdel Rahman El Bacha (pianist, composer), Dr. Hayat Shamsuddin (SVP Art and Culture EXPO2020), Luc de Brabandere (Engineer, senior advisor in the Paris office of The Boston Consulting Group) among others.

Adel A. Dajani will talk about his book "From Jerusalem to a Kingdom by the Sea", in which he tries "to humanize the political events that have affected so many Arabs", including his Palestinian family.

The audience will accompanies Adel A. Dajani on a voyage, buoyed by the universal themes of family, love, loss, identity and, ultimately, the triumph of the human experience in the face of adversity and displacement.
