Meet the Risograph — a high-volume Japanese printer born in the 1980s, once the humble workhorse of offices and schools, now the cult favourite of artists everywhere. Why the glow-up? Affordable, endlessly playful, and blessed with textures and colours you simply can't fake. Powered by organic soybean-oil inks in punchy fluorescent shades, every RISO print comes out with that distinctive, perfectly-imperfect charm — imperfect registration, vibrant colour, visible grain, and a handmade feeling that lives somewhere between printmaking and publishing.
Inspired by the Khali Balak Men RISO exhibition, this drop-in session is your open invitation to make a mess and make it beautiful. Layer colours, embrace the happy accidents, and chase the unexpected outcomes that make every RISO print one of a kind. Here, the process isn't hidden away — it's the whole point.
Better yet, come join Ibrahim Zaki, curator of the Khali Balak Men RISO exhibition, who'll be right there beside you — guiding you through the machine, spilling the stories behind the show, and helping your ideas hit the paper.
No experience needed. Just show up curious, slow down, look closer, and let ink, paper, and machine do the rest. Find us at Tashkeel Nad Al Sheba, home to the only two-colour RISO machine in the UAE.
