This 3-hour workshop introduces participants to Arabic lettering as a visual language and explores how letterforms can be transformed into expressive poster compositions.
The session begins with a short introduction to the difference between calligraphy, typography, and lettering, followed by references from historical and contemporary practices. Participants will then experiment with sketching Arabic letterforms through simple exercises focused on rhythm, structure, scale, and composition.
Each participant selects a word or short phrase and develops it into an experimental lettering composition, which is then translated into a poster layout.
The workshop concludes with a short group review and discussion.
Outcome:
Each participant produces one lettering-based poster and gains practical tools for working with Arabic letters as visual form within contemporary design practice.
