Continuing its longstanding commitment to nurturing talented and ambitious designers across the GCC, Van Cleef & Arpels in partnership with Tashkeel announces the 9th Edition of the Middle East Emergent Designer Prize with the theme “Renewal”.

The call is open to all artists and designers living in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. Submissions must be original and entirely the work of the applicant. Submissions in the form of designs for jewellery and/or watches will not be considered. Upon completion of the winning manufactured final piece and after the press conference, the winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Van Cleef & Arpels L’ECOLE School of Jewellery Arts in Paris for a duration of one week.

Renewal inspires us to discover the potential in all things that can be reborn, remade, or remastered. In nature, the constant metamorphosis of flora and fauna illustrates the idea of vitality and the continuous rhythm of the seasons. While shedding its old skins and reinventing itself for a new season, nature in springtime evokes harmony in motion, as it displays an array of vibrant colors and a symphony of orchestrated sounds rejoicing at its rebirth after a long winter’s sleep.

From its founding in 1906 to present day, the concept of renewal has been at the core of Van Cleef & Arpel’s design philosophy. Renewal leads to innovation and allows the Mains d’Or – craftsmen from its workshops in Paris’ Place Vendôme- to continue to discover new and beautiful ways to transmit the métiers d'art of our creations to the world. As with the dazzling renewal of nature each Spring, the Maison of Van Cleef & Arpels also renews its techniques to bring dazzling jewelry pieces to life in new and innovative ways. The vibrancy, the femininity, the sheer abundance of colours in Springtime is akin to the vibrancy and creativity abound in our workshops.

In celebration of the arrival of Spring – the ultimate season of renewal, Van Cleef & Arpels and Tashkeel invite applicants to create their individual vision of renewal through a work of contemporary design that incorporates the correlating elements of Spring, Nature, Creation and Innovation.

For the 9th edition of the prize, designers are encouraged to look towards nature and revel in its patterns of rebirth and renewal through conceptual interpretations of the process. The submitted proposals should incorporate unique perspectives of Renewal, Spring, Creation, and Innovation in the many aspects of life, time, and nature while enforcing the aspect of form and function.

The concept of renewal reinforces the importance of sustainable approaches to creation. With this, we suggest the use of materials that are sourced locally, in an ethical manner. These can be materials that are reused, recycled or recreated with minimal carbon footprint.
