James Razko earned his Master of Fine Arts degree at the New York Academy of Art in 2015. During his time at the Academy, he received the Academy Scholarship, the New Jersey Heart of a Hero Scholarship, was awarded a summer residency in Moscow, Russia, and was one of six nominated for the Chubb Fellowship. His work is published in the acclaimed book, The Figure. In 2018, Razko received a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation.

This twelve-hour intensive workshop will guide beginner to advanced participants through the step-by-step process of creating a realistic portrait painting on paper using charcoal, shellac, and ultimately oil paint. During the class, participants will learn how to prepare paper as a painting surface, the use of shellac as a sealer and toner, as well as basic and advance drawing and oil painting techniques using a photograph as reference. Under the guidance of the instructor James Razko, participants will also learn the basics of colour theory, value structure, mark making, and composition. This session is suitable for painters of all levels.

Session 1: preparing surface and composition. (3hrs)
Session 2: Drawing on paper with charcoal and sealing it with shellac. (3hrs)
Session 3: General and local glazing techniques. (3hrs)
