In this split-grade workshop, participants will learn how to harness the capability of “multigrade” silver gelatin to accept two or more exposures at different contrast settings or “grades” in order to render scenes with high contrast without loss of highlights or shadow detail.

HDR is often used to represent scenes with high contrast with highlights that would normally fall out of the range of digital sensors. This high dynamic range capability is an intrinsic property of multi-layered silver gelatin film, which will be explored in this darkroom session.

Participants must have prior experience in printing single contrast photographs in the darkroom and some knowledge of the dodging and burning process.

Additional information: Participants are required to bring well-developed, high contrast negatives.
