This publication is an illustrated guidebook on Arabic type design as taught in a series of workshops organized by the Khatt Foundation and hosted by Tashkeel in Dubai for the two consecutive years of 2011 and 2012. This book is designed in two parts. The first part offers highly illustrated yet concise descriptions of the lessons and presentations given during the workshops that highlighted the design process, principles and tools of Arabic type design. The second part showcases the design process and first designs of ‘beta’ fonts produced by the workshop participants. This book hopes to serve as a simple guideline for beginners interested in Arabic type design, as well as a source of inspiration for the design and development of new experimental Arabic typefaces.

We are a cultural foundation dedicated to advancing Arabic typography and design research in the Middle East, North Africa and their diasporas.
