The pharmacists (Atar) of the Arabian Gulf used to mix herbs for medicine. Esra used the plant and flower of several herbs as a concept for handmade earrings, which wearers can mix and match them as the ‘Atar’ did to heal.
This piece is inspired by the plant Myrrh, a perennial tree (a type of shrub). It excretes a yellow gum (resin) from its branches and stems that hardens like Arabic gum and darkens in colour as it ages. It is used to help with cough, shortness of breath, and stomach aches
Other pieces in the A’ashab earrings series include ‘Al Markadoosh’, ‘Haba Al Baraka’, ‘Kaf Maryam’, and Senna. ‘Al Markadoosh’, an aromatic herb originating from Turkey and later spread to the Arab region, is used as a spice to improve blood circulation. Oil extract treats coughs, stomach cramps, dizziness, migraines and depression; Known for its purple and white flowers, ‘Haba Al Baraka’, a common ingredient in medical treatments, pharmaceuticals and cooking, is used for headaches, toothaches and respiratory conditions. ‘Kaf Maryam’, which reappears in summer, contains many nutrients and is primarily used to help women with fertility and pregnancy; Senna was first traded in the ninth centuryand is known for its feather composite leaves. It is used to purify blood, kill fungi and viruses and also treats constipation and eases stomach cramps.

Artist Biography
Esra Bahman studied architecture at the American University of Sharjah before transferring to Girne American University in Turkey.
